Description

Honoring the enduring inspiration of Frank Sinatra, That''s Life is Willie Nelson s second album of classics made famous by The Chairman of the Board. Willie''s first ode to Frank, 2018''s My Way, earned Willie the Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Solo Album, and That''s Life finds Nelson (who has penned a few standards himself) inhabiting 11 more of the most treasured songs in the Great American Songbook including the title track, "Luck Be a Lady," "Nice Work If You Can Get It," "I''ve Got You Under My Skin," "You Make Me Feel So Young," and "I Won''t Dance" (a duet featuring Diana Krall). Produced by Buddy Cannon and Matt Rollings, That''s Life was recorded at Capitol Studios in Hollywood--where Frank Sinatra, created a string of album masterpieces--with additional recording at Pedernales Studios in Austin, Texas. Willie delivers 11 new studio performances, coming alive in a musical landscape animated by lush string and vibrant horn arrangements on an album mixed by recording industry legend Al Schmitt (who''s recorded and mixed more than 150 gold and platinum albums and won more Grammy Awards than any other engineer or mixer). The album cover features a brand new painting of Willie and his iconic guitar, Trigger, standing in the glow of a twilight streetlamp, evoking classic Sinatra album covers of yore.

“That’s Life” joins two other recent albums, “Summertime” and “My Way,” that showcase Willie Nelson’s continuing comfort with and love for pop standards. Those feelings come through loud and clear on each of the 11 tracks - you can tell he’s having a good time, and his enthusiasm is infectious. Here are some comments on individual tracks:

“Lonesome Road,” “I Won’t Dance” (with Diana Krall), “Just in Time,” “Learning the Blues,” “You Make Me Feel So Young,” “Luck Be a Lady,” and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” take a jaunty, upbeat approach. On “I Won’t Dance,” Diana Krall and Willie continue his tradition of all-star duets - here they share a playful exchange of lyrics towards the end. “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” and “Lonesome Road” both use surprising (in a good way) arrangements. Speaking of surprises, “Luck Be a Lady” brought a chuckle both for his choosing it and for his aggressive interpretation.

“In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning” and “Cottage For Sale” take a somber approach, although Willie’s “In the Wee Small Hours...” comes across as more wistful than Frank Sinatra’s. “Cottage For Sale” has an achingly sad interpretation.

Willie has a special affinity for Gershwin tunes, and “Nice Work If You Can Get It” is the latest example of his finesse in interpreting them.

As for the title tune, Willie’s “That’s Life” could just as easily fit in on one of his country albums - it’s tone is spot-on with that genre.

One final observation: this album continues Willie’s use of top flight musicians and production personnel.

“That’s Life” is an album from an artist who charts his own course, and the result is a fun project worthy of repeat listening.

Beginning with his ''Stardust'' LP , Willie Nelson began singing the Great American Songbook. Sinatra has done it and Ella Fitzgerald as well. I have enjoyed Willie''s latest performances and this latest version of Sinatra songs is a treat. Willie is in his eighties and so what? By the way, I''m a Grateful Dead fan and at 74 I enjoy all kinds of music. Sing on, Willie!

I don''t much care for Willie''s new album. I much prefer Willie''s music renditions with little to no background orchestration with Willie''s guitar accompaniment being the primary music, as in Stardust. This album is a major departure from the sparse arrangement that is the stamp of Willie''s music and hearkens back to the horns and strings that Nashville tried to saddle on Willie back in the 60s and 70s, that Willie rejected. I love the art work!

Willie sings Ol Blue Eyes classic tunes and make them his “own”

I found myself digging deep into my Blue Eyes collection to hear songs that I hadn’t thought of for a while. “Cottage For Sale” from “No One Cares” ( I had to actually pull out my moms old record on that one)and “Lonesome Road” from “A Swinging Affair” are two tunes that come to mind. That’s the best thing about collection like this. Add Diana Krall and Willie swinging to “ I Won’t Dance” and Mickey Raphael’s harmonica to “That’s Life” and you’re “there man”.
But for me, “In The Wee Small Hours” is the one that really does it for me-

Once again, and over & over, the jewel case was broken...At least the cd was in good condition! I continue to avoid the hassle of returning / replacing the case and will listen to Willie. From all the broken jewel cases that I''ve had to replace, one would think that Amazon would send me a box of unbroken jewel cases! (3 rating is because Willie''s songs are so good; otherwise the rating would be lower.)

Gave it two stars only because Willie does it well, as he does most songs. But not a collection of songs that I will be listening to again. This disc is on the shelf and will do a much better job just collecting dust. All I can say is I am very disappointed, and probably the first Willie Nelson disc that I wish I never purchased.

Letztlich sicherlich auch der Umstand, dass allein in den vergangenen sechs Monaten so erfreulich viele Altmeister (junggebliebene Haudegen) mit CDs aktiv geworden sind: Cliff Richard ("Music -- The air that I breeze"), John Fogerty ("Fogerty`s factory"), Bruce Springsteen ("Letter to you"), ACDC ("Power up"), Neil Diamond ("With the London Symphony Orchestra"), Paul McCartney ("McCartney III"), William Shatner ("The blues") und Dion DiMucci ("Blues with friends"). Dies merkt man ihm in keiner Weise an. Die Songs "That''s life", "I''ve got you under my skin" und "You make me feel so young" kannte ich schon von Frankie- Boy, ohne nun aber irgendwie enttäuscht zu sein.
