Description

Product Description

Book presents scientific information that hobbyists can use to set up and maintain successful planted freshwater aquaria. Book contains practical tips using a question-and-answer format in boxes scattered throughout the text. Hobbyists learn how to keep a healthy and inexpensive aquarium. Although the author prefers low-tech methods, she lays out the science that underlies all methods. The author shows that hobbyists can create thriving planted freshwater tanks WITHOUT CO2 injection, fertilizers, expensive lighting, and other high-tech gadgets.

Review

I am delighted with the tack taken in which you provide scientific information for hobbyists to make sound aquarium management decisions. I applaud the approach to educate non-scientists about their subjects; too often the scientific laypersons are greatly underestimated. I was particularly pleased with the book''s total avoidance of gadgets that are mostly quite useless. The book''s ecosystem approach and balance of the system is the only reasonable direction long-term. --Robert G. Wetzel, Biology Professor, and Author of ''Limnology''

Your new book is outstanding in every respect. In my opinion, this is a definitive, practical guide for the aquarist who wants to set up a beautiful planted aquarium. Beyond the basics, it is an in-depth exploration of the aquatic ecosystem and how if affects plants. --Don Dewey, former editor of ''Freshwater and Marine Aquarium''

Based on science but engagingly written... The best part is that, in the practical setup section, the author tells exactly what to do, in simple terms, in lists of instructions that one can read and understand. Hooray! --''Aquaphyte'' (University of Florida)

About the Author

Diana Walstad is a long-time aquarium hobbyist. She trained as a microbiologist and spent many years doing medical research at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill). If you just want to put some fish and plants in a tank and hope for the best, have at it. If you want to know why "soil bottomed", natural tanks are superior to high tech tanks for plants, and why tanks with lots of plants create a healthy, stable environment for fish, this book is for you.

Some reviewers complain about the chemistry content and the paucity of pretty pictures. Folks, this is not a coffee table book. Thinks of it as a text book; designed to explain the why and how of creating a successful planted aquarium. The chemistry is no more than high school level, and it is illuminating.

This is a very good book for those who want a healthier, cheaper way to enjoy aquaria.

So far this is a good read. I do enjoy the detail the book goes into to justify something I am currently doing a live experiment on, but I do question the actual engineering standpoint of the book. Ms. Walstad has gone to college level chemistry and biology lengths to explain processes that previously were basically explained by ''magic'' and from the view of a technical proofing she makes awesome claims then backs them up with tried and true science. While the book from this level is as rock solid (or should I say water tight?) it does leave the average reader with little more than a gentle (ish.. brush up on some of those college books you got in your first 2 years!) tour through reactions between plants, fish, soil, minerals, and bacteria. It is up to you the reader to graduate and use this in applied understanding.

TL:DR

Read the book to understand what is going on in your tank, and what can go wrong (or right!) in your micro-ecosystem, but do not expect a step by step instruction with pictures and cute pop ups and coloring areas for what to do when setting up and growing it. You''re getting graphs and annotated studies there were like 4 color pictures in mine and no coloring areas.

I''m going to be neutral about this book and give it 3 stars. If your interested in this book and don''t know what your getting yourself into I suggest getting the $11.99 kindle version in-case you end up with the same sentiment as me as it will be easy to return for refund. I returned this book not because I think its a bad book with no useful information but instead because I hated how this book was formatted. Each chapter is broken down with their respective topics and then brief summaries are discussed regarding each topic. Then the topics either went into further detail or just plain went nowhere coupled with scientific graphs and references ending the chapter. I just hated how the chapters were broken down and had a real difficult time following along. I found myself skipping through a good portion of the book and locating certain information that I found was useful for me as a simple hobbyist. I just could not bring myself to look further through the book. However, as you can see based on the other reviews there are plenty of people who loved this book.

Super useful for the beginning aquarist with a scientific background. This book is essentially an extensive review of scientific literature arguing for certain concepts important for setting up and maintaining a balanced, algae-free planted aquarium. It is meant for anyone who has taken a high school level course in chemistry and biology (eg you should know about how cellular membranes are roughly speaking neutrally charged and hydrophobic). I will say though that the allelopathy chapter is generally very controversial in the aquarist community, due to the success of high tech planted aquariums.

the last chapter is the “manual” to which most people call the “Walstad method.” However, the most important concepts are in the rest of the book, in the previous chapters. Don’t be boxed in to any particular “method,” because she only described her way of applying the concepts. There are many ways that will work and things are always being improved.

This is a very thorough book about the enormous complexity of planted aquariums. The language and presentation is quite scientific and presupposes some base level understanding of chemistry and biology. It is more like a collection of journal articles than a “practical manual” as stated in the subtitle. It was not what I would call an enjoyable read until I gave up trying to track all the parameters and variables and simply marveled at Dr. Walstad’s central themes: 1) even the smallest aquariums are enormously complex ecosystems, that follow logical cause and effect, 2) the bad news: you might need an advanced degree to diagnose what is going on at a molecular level, and 3) the good news: if you follow a few elementary recommendations, you won’t need to: just let the plants and fish take care of each other and achieve equilibrium!

This is a book for advanced planned aquarium keeping. Not for beginners, not a picture book, which is why I bought it. It''s not aquariums for dummies, it''s the scientific understanding of what to do and why it works. Unfortunately my book stops at page 70 and starts back to page 55. Then when it reaches 70 a second time, it skips to page 87. Important pages and information are missing, so it didn''t help me. Very disappointed. Bought this expensive, hard cover book because this was important to me. Unfortunately it''s worthless.

Diana Walstad has provided an essential guide with scientific evidence on how to set up and manage a planted aquarium with a soil substrate. Diana kick started a movement in maintaining a healthy planted aquarium - I have followed her advice in setting my own planted aquarium. In an interview Diana explained that she gained the initial idea from a farm stock pond that had luxuriant plant growth with a soil substrate - and clear healthy water. The book has many practical information guides backed up by tests and numerous chart - for example the efficacy of surface versus submerged plants (see photo). The book is written in a clear easy to read style - and rewards on checking facts to help solve aquarium problems with simple to apply solutions.

An utterly fabulous book, that challenges the more modern way of fish keeping and harks back to the foundation years of ornamental fishkeeping, minus many of today''s trappings. Based on science and a good dose of common sense. Science heavy, so you will need to drag up your school chemistry knowledge. Understanding this book will give any fishkeeper a much deeper understanding of the aquarium eco system. Combined with modern technology, this knowledge will further anyone''s success in the keeping of fish and aquatic plants. Thoroughly recommended.
