I just downgraded stars from 2 to 1.
We just had our 3rd one of these fail in the past 4 weeks. Same issue every time with the spinning deadbolt knob not catching.
    ------

I am real estate professional. I personally own literally 20+ of this model lock. I manage other properties with about 10-15 more. These USED to be the gold standard. Sadly, they are no longer worth their weight in paper, and Schlage (Allegion - parent company) knows it.

I just replaced a couple that lasted ~4-5 years - I am more than happy with that lifespan. Some of these replacements lasted less than 4 weeks each, 1 didn''t work out of the box. In fact, I am averaging about a 50% fail rate on all new BE365''s - that''s a sample size of 8. On the duds, the electronics still work, but the deadbolt will spin and never actually catch the lock to unlock. It just spins forever.

Now in the past, Schlage''s customer service has been top-notch. So I gave them a call. I asked what changed - a redesign or a new manufacturing plant? Let''s solve this problem together, right? I loved their product, and I just want them to work. Well, they declined to tell me. But the CS Rep 100% knew that there is a huge problem that Schlage does not want to admit. They agreed to send me replacements for 3 of the locks (the 4th I had already returned to Home Depot). The advice was to install a piece of felt behind the lock to help protect from the cold. What? Really? I''m in the deep south - it''s not that cold - and why aren''t they supplying said pieces of felt if they know it is an issue??

2 weeks later, no replacements received. I emailed Schlage and 24 hours later, they claim I need to re-send the serial codes (already done once and they acknowledged receipt at that time) and provide additional information. Wow. I''ve spent countless hours already with this, not to mention client lock-outs have costed me $100''s, if not $1,000''s, and I still have broken locks.

So, in summation, what used to be a 5-star product is now a 1-star product. What used to be 5-star customer service is now 1-star customer service.

I''ll gladly update this review if there a reason to do so.

I have never been so incredibly angry at a lock in my life, yet here I am purchasing another. Why? Glad you asked.

Three years ago we purchased our first Schlage keypad deadbolt for our MIL suite door and we loved it so much we bought two more for our other exterior doors. It''s amazing how much your life improves when you don''t have to worry about carrying/losing keys. We changed the batteries on every New Year''s Day as a rule, just to be on the safe side. The override keys were stored in a safe place, or so I thought. I''m sure you can see where this is headed.

Yep! Locked out in the pouring rain with guests arriving in five hours. The battery died after I''d accessed the suite to collect the linens. I''d locked the door behind me, went downstairs to load the washer, and when I returned it was a red blinking light and I was out of luck. But I knew where the key was, so no problem! Except that the key wasn''t where it belonged AT ALL and my husband had just boarded an airplane. Did I mention it was pouring rain?

So after a few minutes of panicking and ransacking every drawer in the house, I called a locksmith. I felt instantly calmer when he arrived but alas, he couldn''t pick it nor could he couldn''t bump it. He tried for 45 minutes in the pouring rain, bless his heart. He called for back up. She couldn''t do it, either. They couldn''t pick it, they couldn''t bump it. They couldn''t do anything. Heck, even WITH the key you have to do some Key Gymnastics to engage the bolt and it just wasn''t possible to do that with the picks, even with three sets of human hands trying to hold the various bits all at once. She offered to come back and drill the keyhole part but expressed concern that all she''d accomplish would be the destruction of the lock without the benefit of it actually unlocking. She apologized profusely and they left. She gave me the number of "a safecracker" she knew (yeah, I don''t know and I didn''t ask.) but sadly that call went to voicemail. Maybe he was out busting into banks, who knows.

After half a dozen phone calls to locksmiths all over town I was getting more and more frantic. My husband''s plane had landed by this point and no, he had no idea where the key was. He did, however, call a friend with some power tools who was kind enough to rescue me. We decided to start violently (since I was so so angry, now) by trying to beat the damned thing off with a ball-peen hammer. No dice. Why? Because that damned thumbturn just spins and spins and spins. Pretty brilliant design when you think about it. ANYWAY, he finally got in by removing the door trim and sawing through the bolt with a freakin'' 6" grinder blade and even THAT took a spell. Then he replaced it with a cheapie Kwikset he had on-hand so my guests could lock their suite. It was an unbelievably stressful day that I do not ever wish to repeat.

That being said: I sure did sleep better knowing how damned hard it would be to break into the house via the doors!

SO here I am, buying a replacement. Was I ticked off the lock didn''t seem to give me an adequate enough warning about the battery? Absolutely. But I sure do feel safer knowing what a complete and total pain it was to get through that lock. Our local burglars are just not down for that kind of difficulty. They lack the drive.

I highly recommend this thing BUT make sure you buy top-of-the-line batteries. Don''t skimp on those and DON''T misplace the key otherwise you''re going to need some heavy artillery.

This feature allows you to lock the door on the way out by simply pressing the Schlage button, without having to enter code.
Pay close attention to step 6, (page 2) of the guide when installing your lock. If it is not oriented as shown in the drawing, TURN-LOCK feature will not work.I emailed and called Schlage several times and they told me that if, after performing a factory reset, the TURN-LOCK feature wouldn''t work, the unit was defective and to return it. I pulled the lock apart and noticed the little "Point Down!" thing was rotated 90 degrees while unit was in the unlock position, this is wrong. It should be oriented like the drawing shows when in the unlock position. Anybody having trouble with the TURN-LOCK feature, check this before you return unit.

Here is the link to Schlage user guide [...]
This is a great unit, btw. Schlage should add this step to check, in the troubleshooting section of the guide.

In less then 2 years both are failing to engage to lock the house or unlock it. 2 of 2 locks failing in about the same time frame are incredible odds. Came here to see if anyone else is seeing the same thing and to my surprise, lots!!!! I wonder how many never take the opportunity to write a review after 2 years. Many of the good reviews are from new owners , I think Schlage designs them to fail so we can buy another. I mean what are your options? go with someone else, buy all new locks? Rekey all new locks? carry more keys? buy another one that will fail and leave me out in the cold, or worse my kids out in the cold. I feel like we gotta stick to to the poor quality of schlage dump em. Schlage major innovation is to design products to fail and leave their customer in the cold rain............

Heavy duty and nice looking. This deadbolt seems to be better quality than the kwikset keypad deadbolt I have. I actually like the fact that you have to turn it to lock and unlock it instead of a little motor moving it, seems like this will last longer and the battery won''t drain so fast. It''s a little bit more complicated to change the code than any other electronic lock I''ve ever had. You have to actually type in a preprogrammed code that is printed in the instruction manual and then enter your own code. Not really a problem, just more difficult than kwikset. All in all I''m really happy with the product.

Update over a year later 12/22/16

I''m still on the same 9v battery this lock started with in November of 2015. the 4 AA batteries in my kwikset deadbolt have died and needed replaced 3 times this year. Both doors get about the same amount of use. This not only saves money but i never worry about getting locked out because of a dead battery. I would definitely recommend this deadbolt over a kwikset any day

    Update 8/27/17
I''m still running on the same 9v battery after almost 2 years. I went ahead and replaced my Kwikset with another Schlage because I was sick of changing batteries.

    Update 6-20-19

I did finally have to replace the ORIGINAL batteries in my dead bolt. It warned me it was getting low for about a month before it locked me out. (Just had to walk around back) I think nearly 4 years is an excellent battery life and I changed the review to 5 stars.

Ok, updating this review. I used to love this lock until today. This thing broke after about 1 month of use. I was demonstrating to someone how to use it and just after I showed her how to lock it, it stopped unlocking. The center gizmo just spins. Locks fine, but just spins when unlocking. We were totally locked out of the house! My trust in this thing plummeted to zero. I spent over $150 on a locksmith to pick a lock o the side of the house and called Schlage customer support. They had me reset the device and that changed nothing. Still spins. Something inside it broke. I will say the customer support is good. They''re sending out a new lock, not that they''ll do anything to help with the installation costs. So I guess I have to do it myself. Gah!

Update: They made good on the replacement and it wasn''t all that hard to replace the part that broke. I''ve since ensured that I have a key in a lockbox outside my house just in case!

After my ex moved out, I wanted to change the locks. I just didn''t want him to have access anytime he wanted to anymore! So after browsing the various options, I went with the Schlage CAM 609 Camelot. I was able to install it all by myself within about 10 minutes using only a manual screwdriver. It''s super easy to program your own 4-digit code, and just as simple to remove a code you''ve programmed. (I find this especially helpful for when the ex needs to come pick up the kids. I can program a temporary code for him, then delete it after he''s got the kids.)

If you''re looking for easy, this is a great choice! Oh! AND it comes with extra secure strike plates, too, with extra long screws so thieves can''t kick your deadbolted door in. I feel much safer in my own home now. :)

Update: We’re still enjoying this lock! The numbers on the buttons don’t show any signs of wear after 18 months of use, I changed the batteries on Jan 1 just to be safe (it came with a key in case the batteries died but i don’t know where it is since I’ve never had to use it!) My only wish is that it had a lighted keypad. If I ever decide to change locks, I’ll choose one with an illuminated keypad.

I purchased the Schlage keypad back in 2014 and I really enjoyed the convenience of the keypad and not having to carry a key to enter the home. One day I could not open the door, the lock was in the unlock position and I could not get out of my home. After opening the mechanism I saw that the slider was in the unlock position however the deadbolt was still in the door keeping it locked. I spent a few hours trying to pry out the slider and eventually pulled it out by hand along with the deadbolt. It seemed the slider and dead bolt had separated, not sure what caused the separation but it happened. I figured "it was a good thing I got a Schlage" after all it has a life time warranty on mechanical parts and the deadbolt is purely mechanical. I go online and fill in my warranty information. I get a reply back indicating that the deadbolt is treated as an electrical component and therefore not eligible for the lifetime warrany coverage. As you can see from my pictures the parts I am showing are purely metal, its a deadbolt how does one treat the deadbolt as an electrical part. That being said if you are buying this lock enjoy it but don''t trust the lifetime warranty because Schlage does not stand behind their product.

What makes this combination lock great is that you have to manually rotate the deadbolt from the lock to unlock position (or vice versa). All the keypad electronics do is trigger a solenoid (i.e. switch) to free the deadbolt for manual rotation. I use to have a motorized deadbolt and when the batteries ran low, it took forever for the electric motor to rotate the deadbolt. You end up standing in front of your door waiting for the motorized deadbolt to unlock or lock your door. Not only that, but the battery depletes quickly when you have a motorized deadbolt. In this case, the battery should last forever given only a small solenoid or switch is activated. This design makes sense and hence far superior to any of the combination motorized deadbolts on the market.

The big upside is that if your deadbolt is not perfectly aligned you can manually turn the knob and push on the door to line it up, instead of having a motor try to push the deadbolt (like the Weiser style). For me the Weiser type is worthless because the deadbolt will never be perfectly aligned through all four seasons. The downsides are two: 1. The mounting requires a 2-1/8" hole, which is bigger than the common 1-1/2" hole. I had to drill all of my doors out for the larger size, not trivial on a metal exterior door! 2. When it gets cold (-20C), the little mechanical internal latch does not work. The knob spins freely and does not engage, so you are hooped (and locked out!). And it would be so much better if it used AA batteries rather than the expensive, and low capacity 9V battery.

I needed to replace the locks on the condo I just bought, and after doing some research, decided to get a keypad lock so I don''t have to carry a key, and can easily create and delete temporary codes for visitors. The Schlage brand has good reviews and some friends who have one recommend it. I was a little nervous about the installation, but the instructions are clear and the installation was simple. It took me half an hour at most, going slowly and double checking each step - would be much faster a second time. The lock comes with two 4-digit default access codes, and you can create as many more as you need. It also has a 6-digit programming code, which you need to enter each time a new access code is added or deleted. I have read the locks aren''t great if exposed to extreme temperatures, but for a condo door that''s interior, I don''t anticipate any problems. There''s one 9V battery (the small rectangular ones) which will need to be changed about every 2 years; when it starts to run low a warning light will come on in plenty of time. The battery is easily accessed by unscrewing the inside cover. There''s also a normal style key, which can be used instead or as a backup.
