Great songs but poorly put together. The credits are very wrong as it listens nearly everything as being a single version. Here is the real deal:
1. Edge of Seventeen – appears to be a new edit at 4’34 as the US edit was 4’05 and the UK edit was 3’36. This “new” edit restores a refrain that was cut out of the single versions (probably at Stevie’s request)
2. Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around (actually is the LP Version)
3. Leather and Lace – this is the 3’32 edit that was on the original 7″ singles
4. Rooms on Fire (Listed as US Single Version but it’s actually the LP Version)
5. Stand Back – this is the actual single version
6. If Anyone Falls – listed as single version, but it’s the LP Version. I don’t recall there even being a “Single Version”.
7. Talk To Me (listed as single version but it’s the LP Version)
8. I Can’t Wait (this is the actual single remix, first time on an official Stevie compilation)
Everything else on the CD except “Maybe Love” which is the radio mix, is the standard album version. The two live songs are taken from the concert shown in the 1982 video “Stevie Nicks in Concert”.

This is a cheaply made release, no liner notes, just a couple of pics and credits. Tracks are in chronological order except for the strange placement of “Rooms on Fire” and the unnecessary live tracks.

“Stand Back: 1981-2017” is the fourth compilation from Stevie Nicks. What sets this set apart from the previous releases is it expands the years covered obviously, but also includes several songs that have never appeared on a Stevie album previously. The first disc contains 17 of Stevie’s singles from each of her seven studio albums. Yes, there are a few missing, her new tracks from her 1991 compilation “TimeSpace” and more glaringly 1989’s “Whole Lotta Trouble”. But aside from that all of the big hits are here. Disc two features 18 tracks, each one a collaboration of some type, be it a duet or a prominent backing vocalist. This is the gem disc of the set in my opinion. More than half of the tracks on disc two have never appeared on a Stevie compilation before, and seven of those tracks have never appeared on a Stevie album period. In the case of “Golden” with Lady Antebellum the track has only appeared as a digital single and “You’re Not The One” with Sheryl Crow was a b-side to Sheryl’s 2002 track “Soak Up The Sun”. Other tracks such as “Borrowed” with LeAnn Rimes, “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” with Chris Isaac and “Beautiful People, Beautiful Problems” with Lana Del Rey appeared on the respective artists albums. Stevie has contributed to many other artists albums since 1976 and a complete compilation could be made just of those tracks. What’s included here is just a sample.
The third disc is something of a time machine featuring various Live tracks from thruout the years. The highlight of these tracks is the Tom Petty collaboration “Needles & Pins” from his 1985 “Pack Up The Plantation Live” album, although the song dates back to 1981. The disc closes out with a handful of Stevie’s soundtrack contributions. The final track being “Your Hand I Will Never Let It Go” from the 2017 film “Book Of Henry”. This is one of the songs that most casual fans and even some die hards may be unaware of.
Each of Stevie’s compilation albums offer something different for fans. “TimeSpace” from 1991 was her first comp and featured remixed versions of her previous hits and three newly recorded tracks. 1998’s “Enchanted” gave us the hits, collaborations and unreleased tracks. It also is the only set to include a “Buckingham Nicks” track. 2007’s “Crystal Visions” brought lost of hits up to date as well as previously unreleased live tracks. And now “Stand Back 1981-2017” covers much of the same ground, but also includes tracks unique to this set.
The set has been released to commemorate Stevie’s solo induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. This set proves that she is much more than just a member of Fleetwood Mac.

The errors that plague the single disc release have been corrected and to my surprise being this a Rhino product all the tracks on this three disc collection are all full length album versions. The mastering varies a bit, the album tracks from "Bella Donna" and "Talk To Me" in regard to the remastered editions of those albums sound better here, the hit tracks sound better on "Crystal Visions" and the repeated tracks on this collection that were featured on the previous "Enchanted" set sound better there. The newer tracks ranging from "Trouble In Shangra-La" through "24 Karat Gold" sound better on their album sources and that includes the soundtrack to "Practical Magic", all those album are mixed with a more open feel and a fuller mix, "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" is fuller and brighter on 1991''s "Timespace." I thought "Enchanted" albeit stretched a bit was the best representation of Stevie''s work to that date and from that release year date on it''d be pretty easy to keep up with her solo output. I was a bit incorrect in regard to her output, there are some amazing rarities here. Bottom line this set is a great addition to any level fan, the rarities make this set worth it to the most ardent, the mastering is better than "Timespace" save for "Stop Dragging My Heart Around," improves a bit regarding the "Bella Donna" and "Wild Heart" remasters, not as bombastic as "Enchanted" and "Crystal Visions" and not as good as the studio albums from 1997 onward.

Don''t get me wrong, I Love Stevie Nicks and have for a long time now. I really had high hopes for this 3-CD set, but it wound up falling short for me for several reasons.

First is the remaster sound quality...and I find this typical of what happens when Rhino misses the mark - they don''t always do so, I have many a Rhino remaster from other catalogs that are fine, but when they get it wrong it''s invariably for the same reasons as here. You can tell the material here has been remastered...most apparent is the very nice separation of instruments which results in great clarity overall. The problem is the overall hardness to the sound which borders on brittleness. On a dark- or thick-sounding system this may seem like a positive in that it''s helping to cut through things and freshen up the sound. But, if the system is already good and clear, then this will sound edgy or hard, not relaxed. Once i was aware that this was what was happening on this disc, it became difficult to shake myself free of the notion of it while listening. Switching to other discs in my collection reconfirmed my suspicion. Also, the bass on this disc is lacking (just a little bit) in energy level. It''s quite clear, focused and musical, but not quite fully balanced with the rest of the spectrum or with other SN discs I have that duplicate some of the material here. I won''t say that the remaster here is an epic fail, or that it will sound bad to everybody, but if you''re an audiophile and you''ve been looking for a long while in hopes of finally getting a great sounding copy of some very good SN songs...well..you may have to keep looking a while longer, is all. I really wish the remastering of SN''s work wouldn''t keep falling to Rhino though, this is at least the second time they''ve (IMO) botched her material.

From a music standpoint, this is not such a bad compilation...a bit weirdly laid out, perhaps, but it includes some nice material for fans casual and dedicated alike. Although it does also include some things that prolly shoulda been left out...like these renditions of Gold Dust Woman and Dreams on disc 3. Not sure if I''m misreading her aesthetic intent, but these two newer versions (originally from Rumours which are among my long-time favorites) but here the performances are actually quite lackluster, with seemingly no real attempt at depth behind them.

OTOH, the newer version of Sara is a standout here (listed here as live, but it''s one of 2 or 3 tracks here that have had all the audience sounds removed). Musically it''s rather straightforward, but Miss Nicks provides it with an unforgettable vocal performance...and as any fan of hers could tell you, I''m not talking about vocal techniques or "tricks", but instead the way she lingers on the words here, giving them such depth, warmth and humanity...not just as the artist that she in fact is, but as a true, romantic visionary...she can find that special way she has of bringing us straight into her world, as if into her bloodstream - and on this one she knocks it out of the park! Of all the tracks on here, this might be the one that most justifies this set''s purchase.

Save for a few tracks here that I don''t have other copies of, I find myself falling back on previous discs when it comes strictly to sound quality, but overall, I''d say this set is recommendable, but with a few caveats.

I have been a fan of Stevie Nicks since her debut with Fleetwood Mac in 1975 on the "White Album" as it is known.
She did do an album before joining "Mac" with Lindsey Buckingham in 1973, called "Buckingham-Nicks" and will eventually get that one.

After coming out with her "Crystal Visions: The Very Best of Stevie Nicks" set, which had a 2 disc version with DVD for her videos and a single audio CD with 16 tracks, I believe Stevie really wanted a more comprehensive, updated version.

So, here we are with the 3 CD "STAND BACK: 1981-2017 Edition.
Every song sounds fabulous over 3 CDs. We get a very nicely done package with each CD being housed in their own sleeve from top opening, not the side opening as "Belinda Carlisle: GOLD" has.
There is s nice liner notes booklet with a few nice photos of Stevie in her early days.
All songs are listed and tracked in the booklet, which is housed in its own sleeve above a photo of Ms. Nicks.
Nicely done graphics throughout the set.
~ Songs are:
* CD 1
Edge of Seventeen
Rooms on Fire
Stand Back
After the Glitter Fades
If Anyone Falls
Talk To Me
I Can''t Wait
Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You?
Long Way To Go

Secret Love
For What It''s Worth
The Dealer
Lady

* CD 2
Stop Draggin'' My Heart Around
Leather and Lace
Nightbird
I Will Run To You
Two Kinds Of Love
Whenever I Call You "Friend"
Magnet and Steel
Gold
Too Far From Texas
Sorcerer
You''re Not The One
Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
Cheaper Than Free

Beautiful People, Beautiful Problems

* CD 3

Ok let''s start with the positives: it IS Stevie Nicks and this includes all her hits in the track listing. Many tracks have never been on vinyl (as Street Angel, Trouble In Shangri-la and In your Dreams have shamefully never been released on vinyl). There are some great duets (love the Sheryl Crow one) that are rarities. It is exciting to open the box to see six lps in quality black jackets.

Now the negatives: Of course it would be great to have her classic Fleetwood Mac songs here in their studio versions but that is never going to happen, and you can get those on FM''s vinyl releases. We don''t really need the live versions included here, it drags the sequencing down and most if not all of them have been released before. Instead they should have included more tracks/b-sides from Stevie''s cannon.

The vinyl sounds good to my ears. The discs are not 180 gram. The 2-page fold out only has credits and a nice image of Stevie from the same shoot as the cover. Bare bones.

I would have much preferred they had just released the Enchanted box set on vinyl and included all of Stevie''s amazing photos and memories of the songs. If you''re a Stevie diehard and vinyl fanatic (I am both) it''s worth it but for the casual fan I would wait for a re-release of Timespace (or look for it on discogs). The Crystal Visions compilation is pretty good but again it''s marred by live songs and re-recorded Fleetwood stuff.

This track listing was interesting and I loved to finally have some of her tracks from In Your Dreams and The Sound Stage Sessions on vinyl . I didn’t bother buying the cd version but did the vinyl version. I have to admit that I was very disappointed in the presentation of this set considering the $70 price tag. It comes in a hard outer box that houses the 6 records that are each in a regular 12” paper sleeve. The crystal visions original vinyl is perfection as it is a sturdy gatefold with huge beautiful pictures, lyrics, photos ect. They def missed the opportunity to make this a treasured piece like Crystal Visions or Enchanted but I am still happy over all with the tracks that are included.

Some of these are getting their first digital or mass release ever! It’s also nice to see “Long Way To Go” finally represented on a compilation, it’s a great track! Sadly, this release is let down by very loud, harsh remastering which is almost painful to listen to at times. The artwork also looks like something out of a bargain bin! The 2 live tracks are a bit pointless, it would’ve been nicer to have some more Stevie solo studio tracks in their place - “Planets of the Universe”, “Sorcerer”, “Whole Lotta Trouble”, “For What It’s Worth”, “Beauty And The Beast”, “After The Glitter Fades”, “Moonlight (A Vampires Dream)” would’ve all made more sense to included as they were all either singles or promo’s. Overall I’m glad I’ve got this, but won’t be playing it that much. The Timespace, Enchanted boxset or Crystal Visions compilations are all better representative of Stevie’s solo career and have better sound.

There have been a number of compilations of Stevie Nicks solo material over the years with the three CD set “Enchanted” from 1999 probably being the best. Enchanted is now a bit of a rare collector''s item and unless you are prepared to pay a silly price for it you will probably end up buying this new Stevie Nicks three CD collection “Stand Back 1981-2017”, which was released by Rhino on the 19th April 2019. Stand Back is a collection of pretty decent material but it seems very little effort from Stevie herself actually went into compiling it – the release production was by Jason Day & Bill Inglot, with Dan Hersch & Bill Inglot taking care of the remastering at D2 Mastering. The material featured here starts in 1981 with the release of the solo album Bella Donna and so there is nothing from “Buckingham Nicks” (1973) or any Seventies-era Fleetwood Mac, and although there are a number of duets and recordings with other artists from later on, this is very much a solo project. As the CD cover sticker says what is featured here are 50 Essential Recordings on 3 CDs - All the Spirited Hits, Live Performances and Esteemed Collaborations; where it scores over “Enchanted” is the inclusion of material recorded after 1999. Stevie Nicks Stand Back is a reasonable release that fills a gap if you don''t already have much of this material in your music collection. The CDs are presented in a card gatefold sleeve with pockets for each disc and one for the booklet – the rather basic booklet features notes by Craig McLean, release details of each track and a couple of photos of Stevie. There is no MP3 AutoRip version of this album and only 40 of the 50 tracks are featured on the streaming services – must be a copyright nightmare! The sound quality of the CD remastering will vary with different players, but both Dan Hersch & Bill Inglot are very well respected American audio engineers with many years of experience behind them so you are unlikely to better their sound if you playback on the right equipment. Currently around eighteen pounds from Amazon “Stand Back 1981-2017” is not bad value for a 50 track, 3 CD set – and although we all would have chosen a different selection of tracks the ones included are pretty impressive! Five stars for the music if not for the whole package.

This is a truly excellent set in terms of the content and mastering/pressing quality. Some of the original recordings were a product of their time and often rather brittle at the top end. These remasters can''t hide that entirely but never stray into harshness and somehow the transients seem sharper and elements of the music have been given more space to breathe. There are many favourites from her solo and group career, plus some unusual tracks I have nowhere else in my collection and some from a live set I remember hearing broadcast live on the radio back in 1982 at the start of her solo career. I have a few compilation albums and all have their merits but overall I would say that if you want just one, then this is the one to go for. A real bonus is that it is a Rhino release and these are well-pressed discs, with low surface noise, flat and free of pops and ticks.

Stevie Nicks Stand Back: 1981-2017 [VINYL] Boxset , Almost faultless music on the compilation, can''t understand why they included a Christmas track and the entire last side of the final record totally blank (just lyrics carved into the vinyl) as could have added a few popular songs missing from the collection. Sound quality is good so no issues there. BUT the biggest let down is the quality of the actual box, the cardboard splits and actual printed cover splits and begins to come away from the box. Before i even touched a single record there were signs of splitting on most edges/corners and with every use it seems to be getting gradually worse. Clearly made on the cheap.
